After the crit I began to look at other solutions, aside from my social network concept. I saw that some people in the class have used an object to make the type for the frame. This is great for this brief as it incorporates photography quite well. I looked into different ways in which I could create type, with an object, to be aimed at a specific target audience. I looked at Lego as an answer. Ideally if I were to pursue this idea, I would buy some Lego and create the design in 3D to photograph, but for the meanwhile I decided to mock up a few ideas inside Illustrator to see how it would look and the best way to go about making it.
The design would be made to be sold as a product of the Lego company. I spoke with my flatmates to get feedback as to how effective this idea is, and they told me that they may have seen something very similar before, but that it would fit with the Lego company theme.
Below are some screenshots of my mock-ups inside Illustrator:
I used The 3D effect tool along with a drop shadow, to give the bricks a slightly realistic look.
If I were to continue with this design I would need to consider how I would create the type in my design. There are lots of variations of type that I could create with the restrictions of the 4 x 2 blocks. A few examples are below.
I then considered how the design could be changed or would be effected if I introduced a 2 x 2 block.
Overall I believe the type below has the best look, although I need to change the x-height of the A to fit with the 4.
A problem I encountered when creating these mock-ups is the computers finding it hard to render so many 3D shapes and shadows at once. This caused a lot of progress bars as seen below, although the programme didn't crash. It's
