Studio Brief 2: Learning Calligraphy

When starting to learn calligraphy I began looking at other peoples work to see the diferent styles that I could do. Hydro74s work as seen below can vary quite a bit and I wanted to get a certain look for my logo. Tattoo inspired but still clearly legible.
The work of the Typographer, Ben Johnston has a much cleaner and more sophisticated style to Hydro 74 which could suite a very posh restaurant. This stye would not suite my vegan fast food truck.
I began by imitating the flick and technique of using the point of the pen at some parts and the side of the pen at others.

I improved very quickly but found that I hit a wall in the learning process and would have to practise a lot more to get any better.
I sketched out a design to go over with the calligraphy pen.
I then noticed that I had made many errors within the sketch. The letters in 'Bros was smaller than they should be.
So I did it again and saw that I had improved. I then realised that the design looked wrong. The composition of the words looked very boring. They were all the same size and directly beneath each other.
My third design makes the word 'vegan' stand out mrs in comparison to the others and you get more of a sense of depth with this composition.
