Today we were given a new task. We were each given a unique word at random along with it's definition and the name of a font. We have to create 10 unique letterforms that reflect our unique word by manipulating the font which we were given. I was given the word "Method" along with the font "Century".
I was a bit confused about the word "Method" at first as it isn't an adjective. If it were an adjective this would be a much simpler task, but I'm looking forward to seeing what outcomes I get.
At first glance I focused on the quote "There is method in the madness" from Hamlet, which I believe could become a strong concept behind a design.
In groups, we decided to pass each of our unique word around and write down the word that we first thought of when reading it. This would hopefully help everyone think differently about the word they were assigned.
My group wrote:
-Recipe
-Rules
-Forward
-Sequencial
-Instruct
-Process
We carried out the same process with the Font we were given.
My group wrote:
-Classical
-Formal
-Elegant
-Books
-Old
-Gothic
-Historic
I then began to create a mind map of what the word "Method" meant to me which you can see below.
The word which gave me instant inspiration was the word "Process" which led me to sketch out the letterform below which is meant to represent the process of creating a letterform. It isn't exactly correct, but it was just a sketch to remind me to research into how the Fibonacci sequence is used to create letterforms with circles.
Here are some examples of what I was trying to show:
