After the interim crit, I used what feedback I had been given to evaluate my designs and come up with a more focused design. I wanted to incorporate Molly's love of the beach more with the design. I looked briefly into the quite common visual interpretation of waves with just simplistic line work. There are some below which I created in Illustrator:
Throughout most drawings of waves there are circles incorporated into them. I used this to help refine my previous tattoo styled font to make it look "less scary", as feedback from the crit showed showed. I also found that circular curves have a kind, calm look to them and would give my typeface a friendly feel, that expresses Molly's personality well. It also fits in well with the font I have chosen (Gill Sans) as it's forms are very circular as well. Bellow is an example of this I made:
I started looking at the different ways that I could incorporate the image of a wave subtly at the end of letterform lines. Below are some of the most effective outcomes. I was very fond of the last 2 but wasn't sure how the 4th would work on different letterforms.
After experimentation I decided that I wouldn't be able to keep the style consistent throughout the typeface and some letterforms didn't fit the horizontal lines. The idea wasn't focused enough and it wasn't clear what I was trying to express.
I decided to go with the more subtle approach which expresses Molly's personality well. The curved ends are soothing and quite calm to look at. They're friendly and not intimidating, which is exactly what I wanted to express. I used circles inside illustrator to make sure the curves were smooth and eased into the inside line to create a more visually pleasing letterform. Below are a few examples:
I wanted to make all the curves point upward and face to the right as to express positivity in Molly's characteristics, although some letterforms looked unbalanced and agressive. The majority of the letterforms did work with this pattern, although there are a few inconsistencies.
After digitising the typeface, I printed it out so I could hand render the typeface on tracing paper and a name badge. Below are the final outcomes of this project:
