Responsive: Menu Research

Research began by collecting menus from other bars and restaurants to see how they had created effective, functional menus that kept in tone with the bars aesthetic.

Jake's Bar menu designed by Analogue has a rustic, yet high quality overall look due to the use of calligraphic type and worn textures. The detailed illustrations add to this effect. The way in which the menu is designed, gives it the look of a book. The inside of the cover has folds which would be seen on the inside of a homemade book.
The type throughout the menu varies in size quite dramatically creating a contrast in type and obvious type hierarchy which lets the audience know which parts of the menu are which.
The design of the menu is quite inconsistent as in the back there is a full page coloured illustration which contrasts with the rest of the menu.
The Roxy Ball Room cocktail consists of solely of vector based graphics. This is very in tone with their brand identity which depicts the company as a fun and modern. The dimensions of the menu are square, but folds out into four panels which allows for a large amount of information. This format allows the bar to stand the menus up in a triangle as seen below, which is very functional from the side of the audience.
Due to their thin ,coated stock choice the menu feels quite flimsy and disposable. This could be considered a good thing if the intention was for the audience to take it away with them.
Revolutions menus is huge in scale and has a very opposite effect to Roxys. the menu feels quite considerable and feels almost valuable due to the large scale and thick stock choice.
The inside is beautifully designed with a colourful colour scheme and variety of font choices to show the wacky, quirky nature of the brands identity.
The use of colour also reflects the colourful themes related to cocktails. The menu uses type to brand each cocktail with a different font.
In some cases the type can be overwhelming and draw too much attention from the small type, but it definitely draws in the attention of the audience.
Red hot world buffets menu has a luxurious feel due to the matte thick stock and beautiful cocktail photography.Throughout the menu there are uv spot varnishes which add to the luxurious style.
The dark colour scheme has connotations of a formal establishment. The askew type contradicts this statement for a more fun, quirky look that balances the general aesthetic to one which is approachable by a very wide audience.
