Design Principles: Type Hierarchy of 3 Newspaper Spreads

The hierarchy of this page is mainly influenced by scale and font choice. There isn't much colour to distract the eye.

The first noticeable piece of type on this page is the huge header that uses a block font.

The next noticeable piece of type is the type underneath the header. The kerning of the letters makes it stand out in comparison to the previous header which has very tight kerning.

The next piece of type that I noticed was surprisingly the piece of text at the bottom of the page. I believe this is due to the line weight and large counters of the letters.

Lastly, the rest of the text is next in the hierarchy because of the large titles.

Sports newspaper

The bright green title is the first piece of text in hierarchy because of it's scale and colour. The thick line weight also contributes to this.

The large quote under the title stands out next because of its size.

The hierarchy moves down the page, the dropped capital at the beginning of the paragraph.

The slightly larger and thicker line weight text makes these pieces o text stand out at the bottom of the page.

Metro for Ipad

The large metro logo stands out first, mainly because of its size, but also because of the contrast of white on dark blue.

Next the huge title of the article stands out.

this red text stands out after the huge title because of its colour and scale. 

The footer stand out before the body text because of the red background that it sits on.
