Studio Brief 1: Development of Hole Idea

I took a very literal approach to the lyrics "there's a hole in my neighborhood down which of late i cannot help but fall" and decided to see if It could create something that would be very literal to the lyrics, but hopefully not end up with something similar as someone else. To achieve this, I illustrated the 'man in a hole' from his perspective (the bottom of the hole, looking up).

I began by taking photos of myself looking up at the light in my bedroom, which would be the light source from the bottom of a hole. Luckily, some of the images actually make it look as though I was at the bottom of a hole.
I did a quick photoshop to use as a reference if I were to draw it.
I then noticed that I could add a lot more drama and impact to my design if I focused around the light that hits the persons face, giving connotations of hope. Below is my first attempt at this technique.
I realised that the angle that I had taken the photo made it hard to interpret what the image was. I chose to retake the photo with the assistance of my flatmate and a torch to achieve a better photo reference.
The outcome of the second illustration was a lot more successful, although didn't quite look like he was at the bottom of a hole like he previously did.
I then added a moon, stars and light hitting the walls of the hole to make it look as though he were. Below are two variations.

I plan to see which variation is more popular in the crit on friday.
