Studio Brief 1: Lyrics Analysis

To get some more ideas I have chosen to look at the lyrics of the song I have chosen, 'Grounds For Divorce by Elbow'. The lead singer describes it saying 'It's a tragic drinking song where the protagonist loses himself in "a hop in my neighbourhood down which of late I cannot help but fall". Frontman 'Guy Garvey' added that the song was writing when he was in an unhappy relationship and that the words tumbled onto the page before he considered their meaning and how it related to his relationship.

Mondays is for drinking to the seldom seen kid

I've been working on a cocktail called grounds for divorce
Polishing a compass that I hold in my sleeve
Down comes him on sticks but then he kicks like a horse

There's a tiny cigarette case
And the rest you can keep
And the rest you can keep
And the rest you can keep

There's a hole in my neighborhood
Down which of late I cannot help but fall
There's a hole in my neighborhood
Down which of late I cannot help but fall

Mondays is for drinking to the seldom seen kid

There's this whispering of jokers doing flesh by the pound
To a chorus of supposes from the little town whores
There'll be twisted karaoke at the Aniseed Lounge

And I'll bring you further roses
But it does you no good
And it does me no good
And it does you no good

There's a hole in my neighborhood
Down which of late I cannot help but fall
There's a hole in my neighborhood
Down which of late I cannot help but fall

There's a hole in my neighborhood
Down which of late I cannot help but fall

Someday we'll be drinking with the seldom seen kid

Mondays is for drinking to the seldom seen kid - In an interview the lead singer revealed that the song  is about 'all the rubbish stuff that was happing to me, ad I wanted to get out of Manchester, to escape from it all. I was drinking to much. Bryan's death affected me in a bad way. When I am sad I tend to drink too much'. This line could be making a reference to making a toast to his lost friend. I could include imagery of a pint on a bar.

I've been working on a cocktail called grounds for divorce - possibly hinting at the fact that alcohol was the leading cause of the divorce. I could possibly have some imagery of a cocktail glass which implies this same message. The singer says this line related to the relates to the unhappy relationship he was in, but that it's also a light-hearted  look at the aftermath of losing his friend.

And I'll bring you further roses - I believe this line is also a reference to the lead singers friend who passed away.

There's a hole in my neighbourhood Down which of late I cannot help but fall - This line refers to how the singer 'wanted to get out of my beloved Manchester. I wanted to live somewhere else, just because of how heavy it got round here'. I could add imagery f a an falling down a hole or struggling to move because of a weight.

Someday we'll be drinking with the seldom seen kid - Making reference back to the first line. This could be a sort of light-heatered remark in hopes of seeing his friend again.

The general tone of the song is quite dark, but there is a sense of celebration and enthusiasm that runs throughout the song as well.
