Studio Brief 4: Cube Design Development

The template below is needed to create a collapsible paper cube.
When collapsed the cube looks like this:
and can be twisted and pulled apart to create a cube like so:
I experimented with creating a collapsable cube that was double in height than width.
The cube box collapses using diagonal folds which create triangles on the side panels which fold onto of each other.
The taller box did at first not fold completely because the triangles's sides were not equal in length.
The cube may be collapsable if there were two diagonal folds in the sides, creating 4 triangles per panel.

The purpose of these collapsable pop ups is to create some pop up paper drinks. The cube will display diferent sides of the drink, and the top with display the drink from above. The aim of this ad, is to engage the audience so that they will play with the cube and show more people. This should also intrigue the audience to visiting the website. the concept for this advert is that with the action of popping up the cube, they are 'making a cocktail'.

The first prototype with made with normal paper and functioned well.

The collapsable action of the cube did not function very well with this stock so I began experimenting with diferent papers.
I tried using a slightly thicker paper. It helped make the box stand up better by itself. The actual motion of twisting and popping the box into shape also improved.
Next I tried using a slightly thicker card stock and backing the triangular panels with mount board.
Visually speaking the box looked terrible. The mount board caused the box to not fold so easily, but the actual pop up action worked surprisingly well.
Next I tried another card stock. By this time I found out that the best way to prepare the box is pre-folded. This way the collapsed cube is more compact.

I Experimented quite a bit with paper choices, and produced a lot of cubes. I found that the last cube that I made was the best. It lost a bit of ink when folding and looked a bit scruffy around the corners. If I had more time I would like to have found something even more suitable, but the box was stable and the pop-up motion was very fluid and easy to do.
