Studio Brief 3: Research and Mock-ups

As research for studio brief 3 I looked at a range of magazines that are reverent to the subject which my 5 double page spreads are based on - Tattoos. The idea of creating a layout that is informed by it's content seemed quite challenging at first, especially with tattoos being the topic.

The screenshot below is from a the tattoo magazine 'inked' website. The layout is quite square based and mainly image based. I would be able to achieve a similar layout with all my photos, but the writing by itself would be rather dull. I could however Illustrate the tattoos and have a whole page for photos.

I wanted to compare the layout of the 'Inked' website to 'Inked Magazine'. Most of the layout was quite generic, using a 3 column layout that had body text, with the odd photo, but there were a lot of pages layer out as seen below. I came up with the idea to have a layout that was based around a tattoo sleeve (all fit together/around each other like a jigsaw) and it seems as though that is the style they have gone for here.
Here is another example with just photos:
This is my attempt at a similar styled layout:

A tattoo inspired layout would probably be crowded, because thats what tattoos are. They occupy a space, although it may be interesting to experiment with negative space to see if it could look as obvious that it had been placed there.

The screenshot below is also form 'Inked' magazine. It is quite crowded using a simple 3 column layout. The photos are from diferent movies. This made quite obvious by the shape of the photos and the 'film reel' style layout. It is quite obvious from a glance that this is the case. The question is , 'how can I do this with tattoos?' .
And again. This is an attempt at a similar layout, although it doesn't suit the content of the page:
